Saturday, December 11, 2004 was the 3rd annual Paddle "Ride" For A Cause surfing event at the 1st St jetty in Va. Beach, VA. The board competition and kayak exhibition/competition was a charity event to benefit the March of Dimes.
25 heats of boardies and 3 heats of kayaks gathered to show their stuff and win great prizes form sponsors, Austin Surfboards, WRV, Frierson Designs, Jetty Life.com, Krispy Kreme Donuts,  and Movie Time Videos. Each heat consisted of 6 wave riders, judged as a final by ESA rules with a 1st and 2nd place finish . The 3 kayak heats were definately a great addition to the charity event this year. Va. Beach Surf Kayakers are responsible for the kayak fun and a whopping contribution of over $750! Board surfers had a great opportunity to see what kayak surfing is all about. Each kayak heat was exciting to watch because there were many different style paddle crafts on each wave: kevlar and carbon surf kayaks over 9ft in length w/out fins, fiberglass surf kayaks with fins ranged from 7' 1'' up to 8' 6", waveskis (a lot of similarities to surfboards) w/ fins, plastic sit-on-top surf kayak models and whitewater kayaks rounded out the variety. The paddlers made surf kayaking look like a great time in the waves! Give these guys and gals from VBSK some credit, surf kayaking is not easy, but they make it look effortless and smooth.
